GRAND
KNIGHT'S MESSAGE
|
FOURTH
DEGREE NEWS
|
|
This month started out on a sad note for our family with the death of my father-in-law, Wally Nagel. Thank you to the many Knights and Ladies who paid their respects at the visitation or expressed their sympathies in any way.
Highland Council 1580 was well represented at the State Convention over Memorial Day weekend. We received the state-wide Columbian Spirit Award for our overall activities.
We also received the State Youth Activities Award for our St. Jude Bike-a-thon. Thanks to Morris and Linda Zobrist for their years of hard work to make this the #1 State Youth Activity.
In addition to these major awards, our scrapbooks received first place honors and our Newsletter, “Knight Times” took first place in the Springfield Diocese.
The Schweizerfest was a success and went smoothly due to the efforts of many brother Knights and their Ladies who gave of their time to work in the food stand and the Bingo tent. It was great to see the number of members who turned out to help at this event. Fund-raisers like this require a lot of work and it always goes better when we share the load!
On that same note, the work list for the Madison County Fair is enclosed with this Newsletter. Please check to see when you are scheduled. Even if your name isn’t on the schedule, please come out and lend a hand to your brother Knights when possible. We especially need lots of help on Wednesday for the Handicap Awareness Day.
As we begin a new Fraternal year, I want to express my thanks to everyone who made the past year so successful.
Jim Plocher

It was during the Great Depression that President Roosevelt asked glass companies to make pretty glass items that women could buy cheaply, to cheer them up. Today, some of this “depression glass” is avidly sought by collectors, and is quite valuable.
Members learned this and much more from Lynn Rehberger, owner of Antiques II in Highland. Some ladies also brought in items for Lynn to examine; she shared her knowledge with us freely.
All officers except for trustee JoAnn Korte were present. Old business included voting to spruce up the K of C parking lot entrance by replacing the plants there, and reminding members of the annual Taste of Illinois cookbook (recipes are sought).
Vice President Dot Durbin gave a summary of the State Convention: our Auxiliary’s scrapbook won first in state, and our Knights’ scrapbook tied for first place as well. Also, the Highland Council earned the highest honor in the Youth Service Award category, for the annual St. Jude Bike-a-thon, chaired by Linda and Morris Zobrist. Kudos to the Zobrists, and to Kay for a great scrapbook—and a great year as president.
Many thanks to all who participated in the Relay for Life, held June 18-19. The Ladies of the Knights team entered both the site decoration and the talent contests—and came in first in both activities! (We couldn’t have done either without help from some of our talented knights.) Everyone’s generosity and hard work in making this a success is deeply appreciated. Our team raised more than $2004 to help in the
fight against cancer.
Because we are an organization that continuously gives to the community, the Ladies Auxiliary voted to chair the Kirchenfest Flea Market this year. This will be work, but fun as well. Please volunteer to help in this worthwhile event.
Officers for the next year were sworn in at the May meeting, with there being no change from the current roster: Kay Plocher, President; Dot Durbin, Vice President; Genevieve Mehan, Secretary; Linda Zobrist, Treasurer; JoAnn Korte, Sergeant-in-Arms; and Chris Gall, Ethel Korte and Pat Korte as Trustees.
Thanks to Phyllis Riedelberger and Darlene Rehkemper for refreshments: Ethel Korte and Judy Hereford will provide goodies at the July 6th meeting. |
Darlene won the 50-50 jackpot, and Josie Potthast won the traveling attendance prize.
Josie will bring some of her historical clothing to next month’s meeting. All members and their guests are cordially invited to attend.

June’s family of the month award goes to a brother Knight and his lady for their commitment to community, church, and council. If there is something that needs to be done around the hall they are among the first to volunteer their time and talent.
This knight has held office within the Council, he also coordinates our Corporate Communion at the churches within our Council area. As a couple they attend both the Corporate Communions and funeral home prayer visits.
The knight and his lady work bingo, the dinners, Kirchenfest, Schweizerfest. Their efforts in these activities help to spread the workload and make it more manageable for all.
It is with great appreciation that we have selected Butch and Aggie Wellen as the family of the month for June 2004.
Congratulations
from Council 1580!
KNIGHT
OF THE MONTH
June’s Knight of the Month goes to a Brother Knight for his continual support of our Council, our Church, and our Community.
This Brother Knight is active in Council activities. He helps at the Fair, the Kirchenfest, the Sausage dinner and on and on. In addition to that, he contributes as a member of our Council softball team which plays in the State tournament every year.
His real expertise however is the computer. He has moved us into the 21st Century with a website for our Council as well as putting our Newsletter on Website. He is also working with the State on their website.
It is with great appreciation that we have selected DAVE MELOSI as our Knight of the Month for June, 2004
Congratulations
from Council 1580!

INFO
FROM A BROTHER KNIGHT
A
boyhood friend of mine, whom I haven't heard from in thirty five
years, wrote to me this
Christmas, and one of his questions was, do your Christians
celebrate Christmas? You can guess my response. Besides buying
new clothes and meat and
decorating a bit of the home, the liturgical celebrations
at the Church is a very joyous and festive occasion. There isn't
anything that is better than celebrating Christmas mass with our
people. Old, middle age
and young, all participate in singing, worshipping and
dancing, to make the mass a thanksgiving and praise to our God.
Other
developments at the parish include the building of our new parish
church. The walls have
gone up, the pillars which will support very long trusses
are going up, and the tresses are almost finished. We hope to have
the roof up by Easter.
At
our High School, St. Joseph¹s Hill, we are registering a new in
take of first
year students. We are building to improve the conditions of the
school and it's over stretched
capacity of 400 students in just 76 classrooms. Soon we should have
a separate latrine for the teachers and staff, a new kitchen
for the staff and students. We are still looking forfunds for
hostels and a basketball court. The soccer field which we
constructed is a beauty-the envy of all sports lovers. At the end of
the year, Brother Leonard Oketch CSC, a teacher at the school,
invited a group called the Youth Alive from Kampala (the capital
city) to hold a four-days workshop with our students.. It was a
success; many of our students have since
become actively involved in the church youth movements.
Our
Holy Cross community at Kyarusozi is at its best, besides a
few changes. Brothers Deo Magezi and Leonard Oketch teach at
St. Joseph's Hill High
School, Bro. Bernie Klim (our elder) does a lot of construction and
maintenance work all
over. Fathers Lucius Atwine and Aristides Massawe are moving
to new assignments while Fr. Andrew Massawe will join us around
Easter time. The Sisters
of the Holy Cross, running the Family Center - with health
care and women development, are growing younger and enthusiastic
with more
young women joining them in pursuit of religious life.
We
always remember you all and thank you for your generosity. We will
pray for you during the
holy seasons of Lent and Easter.
Fr.
Richard Potthast CSC, Pastor

SENIOR
KNIGHT OF THE MONTH
June’s
Senior Knight of the month award goes to a Brother Knight for his
continued service and support of our Church, Community, and Council.
This
Senior Knight supports our Council’s Church activities through his
participation in our corporate communions, and rosary service.
For many years he has been the co-chairman for the Newman ,
Right to Life, and Vocations fund raiser.
As
a 4th degree member his participates in honor guards for
the Church, Bishop, and funerals.
He
supports Community activities through his assistance in the Madison
County Fair, the Schweizerfest, the MRLD “Tootsie Roll” drive,
St. Jude’s Bike ride and Bingo.
When
a fellow knight is called to rest he is at the funeral home to pay
his respects. .
He
supports our Council activities through his assistance at the
Sausage Dinner, Chicken Dinner, and Lenten Fish Fry’s. He is
always available when work is to be accomplished.
Recently,
he helped in installing shelves in a walk-in cooler. The significance of this activity was not known until
something was dropped. These
shelves made the cleanup much easier.
His
greatest assistance to the Council has been his serving over 25
years as the Council’s Financial Secretary.
With
his dedication and service to the council, we are known as one of
the best councils in the state.
It
is with great appreciation that we have selected Paul Musenbrock as
our Senior Knight of the Month for June 2004.
Congratulations
from Council 1580

FROM FINANCIAL SECRETARY

The
deadline for the August Newsletter will be July 20th.
We
would like to thank the two people who called in their change of
address before we had their newsletters returned and also thank
you to two more people who have added their names to our e-mail
list.
We
would still like to encourage our members and especially our new
members to consider using the E-mail system to get their monthly
news. It is both
cheaper and you can get your Newsletter earlier by this method.
Please take time to send us an e-mail to highlandkc@charter.net
so we can add your address to our e-mail listing.
To reach our website use highlandkc.org.
Also
please let us know your change of address so that we can cut
down on the expense for the return of your Newsletter.
Due
to a computer glitch some of the birthdays were omitted in last
month’s Newsletter. So
sorry this happened.

Here we are with six months of the year gone and we still have over 50 members who have not paid their dues. Dues were due as of the first of January. Regular members dues are $18.00 per year and Honorary members are $9.00 per year. Fourth degree members’ dues are $8.00 per year additional. If you are unsure about your status, give me a call at 654-3054. Members can save the Council considerable money by paying their dues promptly. Statements have already been sent out as a first notice. Members can drop payments off at the hall or send them to me.
Thank you.
